Dermal Fillers

FAQ

What are Dermal Fillers?
Dermal fillers are substances that have been developed to be injected into our skin to help correct defects such as wrinkles, creases and scars, as well as, to enhance areas like the lips and eyebrow regions. There are a number of fillers available and individual fillers can be further reviewed under FAQ (Juvederm, Restylane, Perlane and Radiesse).

What are the side effects from dermal fillers?
All fillers can cause bruising, redness and swelling that lasts for several days. Occasionally, fillers can cause lump formations in the skin which can be treated in various fashions, if necessary. Rare complications of fillers include occlusion of blood supply to the skin, abscess formation and acneiform eruption.

How long do fillers last?
Individual fillers have different time spans in our skin. The more active an area is, the lower the life of the product (especially lips). Life of each filler product can be found under the individual fillers FAQ.

How painful are treatments?
Most patients prefer to have anesthesia similar to that given in a dentist’s office. We provide a variety of techniques and in some cases if preferred, topical creams can be applied and sufficient time to allow these to anesthetize the skin for individuals who desire to avoid dental blocks

What problems do fillers correct?
Fillers are most commonly used to flatten nasolabial folds and soften the crease to the cheek (giving a more youthful look), enhance and reshape lips, flatten marionette lines (side of mouth to chin), fill in scar defects, alter nose deformities and bumps and much more.

Will laser or IPL treatments damage fillers in the skin?
No. Fillers are very stable products and after a short time period (we usually recommend 2-3 weeks), IPL and laser treatments are not only safe, but often add to the overall appearance in a positive fashion.

Are there medications that should be avoided prior to using fillers?
Medications that can increase bruising and bleeding at the injection site should be avoided for at least 1 week prior to the injections. These include Aspirin, NSAID family (Advil, Motrin, Aleve etc.), St John Wort, high doses of vitamin E, gingko biloba, ginseng and ginger.
